Smidge the Tooth Fairy
Happening somewhere right now…
“Podge,” says Midge, from her office. “We’ve got a beaver with a broken tooth calling in.”
Podge puts away his hammer. He’s almost done hanging the art in the waiting room.
At the dam, Midge introduces herself. “I’m Midge, your fairy godmother. And this is Podge, my associate.”
“The toad?” asks the beaver, whistling through his broken tooth.
“That’s right,” says Midge.
“What’s he supposed to do?” asks the beaver.
“I help in a lot of different ways,” says Podge, who actually has a growing to-do list.
“Can you use magic?” asks the beaver.
“No,” says Podge.
“Did you study dentistry?” asks the beaver.
“No, I did a local poetry workshop once and now I have this job,” says Podge.
“Brilliant!” sighs the beaver. “So what can you do about my tooth!”
“I’m going to send word to my sister, Smidge,” says Midge.
“What is she? A badger?” whines the beaver.
“She’s a tooth fairy,” says Midge.
Smidge arrives with her tooth brush wand ready in hand. She looks very much like Midge, only slightly smaller.
“You have two options,” says Smidge, looking into the beaver’s mouth. “I can shave it down so it’s not so sharp, and it will grow back in about six months. Or I can expedite the growth, but it will cost you.”
“Aren’t I supposed to get money for losing a tooth?” asks the beaver.
“You haven’t lost anything. I would actually be giving you a new one,” says Smidge.
“Fairies.” growls the beaver. “I’ll let it grow on its own.”
The beaver waddles back to his dam, cursing fairies, their odd ways, and even odder associates.
“Thanks for coming on such short notice, Smidge,” says Midge. “This is Podge, my associate.”
“Hi Smidge,” says Podge, who has never met a tooth fairy before on account that he has no teeth.
“When can I come to the new office?” asks Smidge.
“When it’s done,” says Midge.
“I’m almost finished decorating the waiting room,” says Podge. He found some good art at the flea market.
“Do you have any candy bowls?” asks Smidge.
“No,” says Podge.
“Well can you add some? Business has been slow this year.” says Smidge. So Podge adds another bullet point to his expanding list of things to do.
