The Very Simple Wish

Happening somewhere right now…

There’s a knock at the door of the fairy godmother’s office.

“I’ll get it,” says Podge, who has been in a lull since the office décor is now complete.

Podge opens the door to a gopher.

“Hi Podge,” says the gopher.

“Hi Gina,” says Podge, who happens to be Gina’s neighbor. “Are you looking for Midge?”

“Yes, I heard she opened a fairy godmother office in town,” says Gina.

“I have indeed,” says Midge, from the hallway. “Come inside.”

“I don’t have a lot of time,” says Gina.

“What is it, dear?” says Midge.

“I was supposed to bake a cake for my niece’s birthday, but then I had to go pick up Jeremy from soccer, and drop Carla at her hip hop class, then I went to the store to get the ingredients, but I forgot the strawberries, and the whole thing was that it was supposed to be a berry cake, but I don’t think it will be any good if there are no strawberries in it, so I went back to the store just to buy a cake and not bother with all the fuss, but all they have is chocolate and my niece doesn’t like chocolate which is crazy, but –”

“So, you need me to bake you a cake?” asks Midge.

“I need you to bake me a cake,” says Gina.

“Easy,” says Midge. She flicks her wand, and a three tier berry cake appears in Gina’s hands. “Do you need a box?”

“Yes, please!” says Gina.

Midge flicks her wand, and the cake is packaged and wrapped in a great big bow.

“Thank you so much, Midge!” says Gina. “How much do I owe you?”

“We’ll chat details later,” says Midge. “Hurry now!”

Gina shuffles down the road to her sister’s house, which is just on the other side of Podge’s house.

“That was easy,” says Podge. “How did you do that?”

“Cake is one of the first classes you take in godmothering school.”

“Really?” asks Podge.

“Yes, that and Psych 101,” says Midge. “So, how’s Gina as a neighbor?”

“She’s great,” says Podge. “But she does leave a lot of holes in my garden.”
