Halloween: Part Two

Happening somewhere right now…

Previously on Podge, Midge, and Sometimes Smidge: Podge was captured by witches. Midge and Smidge came to the rescue only to be captured themselves. Soon they will all be ingredients for the witches’ Halloween youth potion. Also, Katherine the witch has arrived back early from her holiday in Portugal.

“Katherine,” says Gloria, who still has a cavity from Smidge’s curse. “Why did you come back early from Portugal?”

“No reason,” says Katherine, as she stirs the youth potion.

“Was Paul there?” asks Martha, still toothless.

“No,” says Katherine.

“Where was he?” asks Gloria.

“How am I supposed to know!” says Katherine. Gloria and Martha look at each other with brows raised.

“Well, you usually know,” says Martha.

“Well, Martha, I don’t anymore. I cut him off after I heard he turned good,” says Katherine.

Martha spits on the ground. Gloria shakes her head at the mention of the other side.

“Paul!” screams Gloria. “How could Paul the Baby Boiler be turned to the light?”

“What ever happened to Paul!” cries Martha. “How could a wizard who once took up dentistry as a hobby, find goodness?”

“Ew! Can you believe Paul, the evilest wizard ever to walk our cursed grounds, now volunteers at the Westside Animal Shelter every Wednesday and Saturday?” adds Katherine, in a sort of weird high pitched way.

“What?” says Martha.

“How do you know that?” asks Gloria.

“Oh, I just heard it somewhere,” says Katherine.

Martha and Gloria look at each other again, only this time with brows furrowed.

Meanwhile, on a shelf and in a jar, Midge and Smidge brainstorm how to get out of there.

“Where’s Podge?” asks Smidge.

“He just hopped out. He must be finding help. He’s a very resourceful associate,” says Midge.

“How are we going to get out of here?” says Smidge.

“Well, our wands are gone, our wings are clipped, and they’ve hot glued the bottom of this jar to the surface so there’s no tipping it over,” says Midge.

“Why do witches want to turn young anyway?” asks Smidge.

“They think it’s the only way to feel youthful,” says Midge. “They haven’t figured out how to wear color. They only wear black, because it’s chic.”

Smidge nods, seeing how one could fall into that trap.

The fairy sisters watch as Katherine opens the jar, grabs them by their clipped wings, and hauls them over to the cauldron.

Martha cackles through her toothless mouth while Gloria shrieks from the pain of her one remaining tooth, which now needs a root canal.

Just as Katherine is about to drop the fairies into the bubbling green mass, she hesitates.

“What is it Katherine?” says Gloria.

“What is it now?” says Martha. “Have you turned… good too?”

“No! I will never be good!” shrieks Katherine, defying her gut. She makes accidental eye contact with the tiny fairies pinched between her fingers, and holds them tighter.

“Katherine!” says a male voice from the door and the witches turn on their heels.

“Don’t do it Katherine,” says Paul, former baby boiler and current animal shelter volunteer.

Podge sits on his shoulder, smiling.
